『反省する』＆『REGRET』についての討論会 Part 1
日曜日は良いお天気🌞だったので、夫婦揃って庭で日向ぼっこ。
風も穏やかで気持ち良いぞ〜。
実は我が家の庭のフェンス、２月初旬の嵐で５枚位パネルが吹っ飛ばされて、ロックダウンが始まる直前までず〜っと歯抜け状態で、１ヶ月位両隣さんちから丸見えだったんですね。
管理会社さんを通して、そのお抱えハンディマンのＷさんに何度も何度もお願いしていたのになかなか直して貰えず、いつまで待たせるんだと旦那様が若干キツめの怒りメールを出してくれました。
ところが、管理会社さんが彼の怒りメールをＷさんにそのまま転送。
すると今度はＷさんから逆ギレメールが😳。
何で私達がアンタに叱られないといけないの？
本当は更なる怒りメールを出したかったんですが、そうすると面倒臭い事になりそうだし、意地悪されて修理にまた時間を掛かけられても困るので、理不尽さを感じながらも大人対応で返信。
そうこうしてやっとＷさんが直しに来てくれた次第です。
私: I am so glad W finally fixed the fence. Otherwise we can't sunbathe like this in the garden.
赤ペン先生: Yup. Thanks to me, if I didn't send the angry email, who knows how long he would take to fix it.
私: I appreciate what you did and I am still not happy about W's attitude. It was so wrong to reply to you like that and it was utterly unprofessional. I want him to 反省... How do you say "反省" in English? Being sorry in this case is not right.
赤ペン先生: Regret.
私: Umm.. "regret" doesn't sound right to me.
赤ペン先生: I know what regret and 反省 mean. In this context "regret" is the right word.
私: But to me "regret" is just feeling sorry for what you did and there is no indication not to do it again. When we scold at kids we say "反省しなさい" not "後悔しなさい". "反省" means not just accepting what you did wrong but also includes the next action. "後悔" doesn't.
赤ペン先生: This is a good example of a single word in Japanese having several equivalents in English depending on the context. If I did something wrong, I could say "I regret it and won't do it next time." But if I scold a child then they would normally say "I'm sorry I won't do it again." And in a courtroom context, if a defendant doesn't look like he is sorry about committing a crime, the judge would say he shows no remorse. What's so interesting is that all these terms can be covered by.
私の中では、『反省する』と『後悔する』は違うもの。

は日本語訳では（他にも意味ありますが）
『後悔する』
であって、『反省する』とは違うんだけども、英文だと『後悔（＋反省したい人は反省）する』って意味合いっぽい🤔。
赤ペン先生曰く、文脈や状況によって『反省』の英語の表現も変わってくるとの事。
日本ではよく「反省さなさい」って言うけど、英語ではそんな表現がないみたい。
敢えて言うならば
"Look what you did. Shame on you."
みたいな…でも、これも何だかニュアンスが違う気がするんだな🙄。
『反省する』を英辞郎 on the WEB - 英和辞典・和英辞典で調べると、
とあるのですが、
"Reflect on what you have done."
って何だか長ったらしくないですか？
あ〜コレ、👉我が家では『ルー語』は使用禁止となっております🙅🏻♀️。 - ペリカン英語日記の中で話した『長ったらしい意味がコンパクトに短い言葉になっている場合』に当てはまると思います。
"I want W to do 反省."
って言っても、日本語が分かる英語人には通じると思います。
