The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

今楽しんで聞いている audiobooks はこの２冊。

👆👆両方とも面白〜い😆のですが、今回は "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" について。

（"Pumpkin" もイイ👍ので、そちらはこの次に。）

実は "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" は、数年前に舞台を観てるんですが、その内容を殆ど覚えていないと言う情けなさ😅。

たまたま借りられたので、どんな話だったかを再確認したい気持ちもあり、フラッと借りて何となく聞き始めたのですが、『これこんなに面白かったんだ〜。』と、とても楽しく聞いてます。

この audiobook の読み手さんは、多分その当時１３〜１５歳位でまだ声変わりもしていない少年、子ども俳優の Ben Tibber 君。（現在３１歳、今も俳優）

イイ‼︎

読み手がなかなかイイ‼︎

１５歳の主人公 Christopher Boone の first-person perspective （主観［一人称］視点）で綴られているこの本は、読み手の Ben 君が主人公の Christopher の味を良い感じに出していて、さすが俳優さん、読み聞かせ方もとても良かったです。

さて、その本の内容はと言いますと、

上記のあらすじでは、Christopher はアスペルガー症候群のある子だとしていますが、著者である Mark Haddon 氏は２００９年７月に自身のブログで以下の様に述べてらっしゃいます。

The Curious Incident is not a book about Asperger's...if anything it's a novel about difference, about being an outsider, about seeing the world in a surprising and revealing way. The book is not specifically about any specific disorder.

本の中にも Christopher が Asperger syndrome, high-functioning autism, or savant syndrome など、何か特定な症状である事の記述はありませんが、アスペルガー症候群など何かしらの発達障がいのある方は個人個人色々違いはあるとは言え、Christopher の様なお子さん（又は大人）の物の捉え方、見方や感情などを垣間見れ、少しだけでも彼らを知る事が出来、またそんなお子さん（又は親や兄弟）を持つ親御さん（や家族）の苦労や葛藤を知る事が出来る本でもありました。

（本の中に出てくる "snooker" 写真左と "battenberg cake" 写真右。Battenberg cake はまだ食べた事ないので食べたくなりました😋。）

"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" の中身を少しご紹介。

言った様に、私はこの本を読んでいるのではなく、聞いているので、chapter も音声から知る事になります。

読み手さんが１を飛ばして "chapter 2..." と読み始まめ、その後は３、５、７、１１、１３、１７…と続き、何故〜❓🧐と思っていました。

この本は、主人公 Christopher が遭遇したある事件をきっかけに、捜査の開始からその捜査の進展具合をしたためた内容となっていて、普通の本であれば chapter は cardinal numbers （基数）で１、２、３…と進むのですが、Christopher が prime numbers （素数）が好きだからそのようにしたと説明しています。

彼は大好きな prime numbers をこんな風にも表現しています。

I think prime numbers are like life. They are very logical but you could never work out the rules, even if you spent all your time thinking about them.

深いわぁ…😑

私がこの本を気に入った理由は幾つかあるのですが、その１つが metaphorical/figurative expression （比喩的な表現）が無く、色んな描写がストレートな事。

時に英語での比喩的な表現って理解するのが難しいんですよね😥。

私は Christopher とは違う理由で、この metaphor が苦手です。

Christopher の場合は、苦手な訳ではなく、人を理解するのに混乱する様です。

I found people confusing. 
There is for two main reasons. 
The first main reason is that people do a lot of talking without using any words.

The second main reason is that people often talk using metaphors. 

として、コレだから自分は理解に混乱するんだよ〜と言う metaphor の例を幾つか挙げています。

• I laughed my socks off. 
• He was the apple of my eyes.
• They had a skeleton in the cupboard.
• We had a real pig of the day.
• The dog was stone dead. 

I think it (metaphor) should be called a lie.
When I try and make a picture of the phrase in my head it just confuses me because imagining an apple in someone's eye doesn't have anything to do with liking someone a lot.

これらのイディオムの意味は

"laugh one's socks off"

-you find something really funny, so you are laughing a lot

"the apple of eyes"

-something or someone that one cherishes above all others

"a skeleton in the cupboard"

-a discreditable or embarrassing fact that someone wishes to keep secret

a pig of (something)

-a particularly difficult, unpleasant, or undesirable task or thing

"stone dead"

-completely dead

Metaphor should be called a lie.

と言っていた Christopher ですが、その後で inspector をこう表現しています。

The inspector had a very hairy nose. It looked as if there were two very small mice hiding in his nostrils.

This is not a metaphor, it's a simile. A simile is not a lie, unless it is a bad simile. 

simile は比喩の一種、直喩と言う意味で、二つの異なるものを like や as を使って比較する修辞技法、たとえを明確に表現した技法です。

simile なら大丈夫なんだね。

確かに直喩の方がイメージし易い感じがします。

Mathematics や physics が好きな Christopher が、時折そんな難しいネタ（知識）も織り込んでくれてて勉強にもなります。

色んな人達と交わした会話の記述も沢山なので、難しい所もありましたが、全体的には割と分かり易い内容だと思います。

前述した様に、筆者さんは『そう言った障がい（のある方）についての本ではない。』と語ってらっしゃいますが、私も娘を持つ身として、Christopher よりも彼の両親の事を考える事が多かったです。

Christopher と向き合う両親の日常の大変さはもちろん、愛する我が子をギュ〜ッと抱きしめたいのに出来ない辛さ、怒りや悲しみといった感情をなかなか分かって貰えない切なさ、互いの logic が違う為になかなか事がスムーズに進まない歯痒さ、などなど彼らの葛藤を想像していました。

特に Christopher のお母さんは、彼を凄く愛しているんだけど、彼への対応や色んな事が上手くいかずいつもイライラしている感じで、私が彼女の立場だったらどうしただろう、と思わずにはいられませんでした。

私の主人にも autism の従弟がいるし、私は発達障がいのお子さんを育ててるお友達もいるので、彼らの事も思いながら聞いていました。

Vintage Children's Classics とありますが、crime, detective, adventure ちょっとだけ mathematics & physics と、色んな要素が散らばっていて、大人も楽しめる "The Curious Incident Of the Dog in the Night-Time" おススメの１冊です👍👍👍。
