double-edged sword

Easter weekend の４連休。

（娘が友達から貰ったイースターエッグが１個だけ残ってたよ😊。）

ロックダウン中で、出掛ける予定はゼロなので、友達とウェブチャットする約束を数件立てました。

こんな時だからこそ、元気にしているかの確認も兼ねて、久しく連絡していなかった友達をバーチャル訪問😊。

今日は車で１時間程離れた場所に住むＴ夫妻とお喋り。

２人共そうなんですが、特に奥さんの方はカラカラ〜ッととっても明るく、細かい事は気にしない、そして家族の統率力バツグンの姉御肌。

彼女が「カリフォルニアの森林火災の時、煙が凄くてマスクが必要だったの。その時のマスクが幾つか残ってて、買い物に行く時にはそれを持って行くの。でも、気付いたらポケットに突っ込んだままだったって事がしょっちゅうよ。」と、笑って話してくれました。

買い物行くのもストレスを感じていた私には、こんな感じの話題が必要。

そんな姉御はフィリピン🇵🇭産まれ、アメリカ🇺🇸カリフォルニア育ちのフィリピーノアメリカ人。

フィリピン🇵🇭のコロナウイルス事情を聞いてみたところ、

「ドゥテルテが『家から出んなっ！』って言ったら、絶対ダメなんだから、見つかったら逮捕されて、刑務所行きなんじゃないの。」

お国が違うとロックダウンの様相も様々。

私: I have never paid attention to how the Philippines is now. So I asked her about it. Apparently the Philippines is also in lockdown. But according to her, if Duterte says "stay at home" it really means "stay at home". Unlike here or other free countries, if you are walking around outside you will be arrested and sent to the jail. So we were saying that for countries like the Philippines or North Korea, the government can stop people from spreading this virus but they have no freedom. On the other hand even though we are in lockdown, we still have the right to go outside. We may be fined but won't be arrested. But by not following that rule we may be spreading the virus. It's ironic isn't it?

赤ペン先生: It's called "double-edged sword". A sword has a sharp edge on both sides. It means it has negative effects as well as positive effects. So in a totalitarian country like North Korea the government can control peoples' behavior to prevent spreading the virus which is good but at the same time people have no freedom which is bad. Totalitarian country means like a dictatorship. A good example for "double-edged sword" is the Internet. The Internet is a great tool but it can be a bad influence.
