使えそうなイディオムがテンコ盛り😆‼︎な “Breaking Bad” おまけ編

"Breaking Bad" は、既に暫く前に観終わったのですが、こちら👇の場面を観ている時の事。

赤ペン先生が小声で「あ、この言い回し、覚えてたら後で説明してあげるから。」と。

"Do me a favor. Put in a good word for me with Fring. I mean, just for old time's sake. I can't afford to butter the wrong bread here."

やっとこさ、説明して頂きました。

私: Do you remember that you said you will explain this phrase later?

赤ペン先生: Oh yeah, I forgot about that.

私: I know what Saul said is not the exact idiom but he said it based on some idiom.
赤ペン先生: Right. You need to check "you should know which side your bread is buttered." first.

赤ペン先生: It means that you know which side is more beneficial to you than the other. For example there are two friends. One is a not a good person but has a lot of connections with powerful people. The other is just a friend with nothing special. So you should know which side your bread is buttered.
私: I see. It means you should know which friend to be nice in order to get advantages for yourself.
赤ペン先生: Exactly. But you may not use it that often I think.

赤ペン先生は、このイディオムを使う事あるかなぁと言ってたのですが、次の日。

中国🇨🇳が香港🇭🇰に対して新しい香港国家安全維持法を導入したニュースの話題。

私: I read some article and it says that 27 countries told UN that China 🇨🇳 must reconsider Hong Kong 🇭🇰 security law. Japan 🇯🇵 is one of 27 I believe. But guess what? Over 50 countries led by Cuba 🇨🇺 support Chinese side.
赤ペン先生: More than 50 countries? Wow. I wonder which countries they are. Oh! This is a good example to use that phrase. Whichever country they are they know which side their bread is buttered.

ほほ〜、なるほど。

おっと、忘れるところでしたが、上の場面でもう一つイディオムがありましたね。
